Mars: Wind Friction Speeds for Particle Movement

چکیده

Wind friction threshold speeds (V,t) for particle movement were determined in a low pressure boundary layer wind tunnel at an atmospheric pressure of 5.3 mb. The results imply that for comparable pressures on Mars, the minimum V,t is about 2.5 m/sec, which would require free-stream winds of 50 to 135 m/sec, depending on the character of the surface and the atmospheric conditions. The corresponding wind speeds at the height of the Viking lander meteorology instrument would be about a factor of two less than the free stream wind speed. The particle size most easily moved by winds on Mars is about 160 •m; particles both larger and smaller than this (at least down to about 5 •m) require stronger winds to initiate movement. The results presented here are in general agreement with previously reported values of V, t for particles 12 •m to 300 •m derived from one atmosphere tests, but are inconsistent with values for particles larger than about 300 •m.

Threshold Windspeeds for Sand on Mars Wind Tunnel Simulations

Wind friction threshold speeds (u,t) for particle movement (saltation) were determined in a wind tunnel operating at martian surface pressure with a 95 percent CO 2 and 5 percent air atmosphere. The relationship between friction speed (u,) and free-stream velocity (%0) is extended to the critical case for Mars of momentum thickness Reynolds numbers (Re0) between 425 and 2000. It is determined t...

Soil Transport by Winds on Mars

The eolian transport of surface material on the planet Mars is estimated from results of low-pressure wind tunnel testing and theoretical considerations. A semiempirical re ation is developed that will estimate the total amount of surface material moving in eolian saltation, suspension, and surface traction. The estimated total mass movement of surface material per unit width time on the surfac...

Lifting Dust on Mars by Greenhouse Effects and Thermophoresis

Introduction: Dust is continuously lifted from the Martian surface and put into atmospheric suspension. This is well visible during dust devil activity [1] and planet encircling dust storms [2]. The mechanism for the atmospheric dust entrainment has been debated for a long time. Wind stress can easily put dust into suspension under Earth conditions, i.e. at ~1000 mbar surface pressure. In princ...

Difference in the wind speeds required for initiation versus continuation of sand transport on mars: implications for dunes and dust storms.

Much of the surface of Mars is covered by dunes, ripples, and other features formed by the blowing of sand by wind, known as saltation. In addition, saltation loads the atmosphere with dust aerosols, which dominate the Martian climate. We show here that saltation can be maintained on Mars by wind speeds an order of magnitude less than required to initiate it. We further show that this hysteresi...

Wind-invariant saltation heights imply linear scaling of aeolian saltation flux with shear stress

Wind-driven sand transport generates atmospheric dust, forms dunes, and sculpts landscapes. However, it remains unclear how the flux of particles in aeolian saltation-the wind-driven transport of sand in hopping trajectories-scales with wind speed, largely because models do not agree on how particle speeds and trajectories change with wind shear velocity. We present comprehensive measurements, ...
